Biography

Born December 29 1964 in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Jean-Benoît Nadeau completed a B.A. in Political Science at McGill University in Montreal. An experienced speaker, Nadeau has published 6 books and 900 magazine articles and won 30 journalism awards. An accomplished instructor, Nadeau is among the few Canadian journalists who publish in French (L’actualité, Québec Science, L’Express) and English (The New York Times, the Christian Science Monitor). In 1998, Nadeau won a fellowship from the Institute of Current World Affairs to spend two years in France studying “Why the French Resist Globalization.”

A Successful Author

On returning from France, Nadeau published a humorous account of his years in France called Les Français aussi ont un accent (“The French Have an Accent Too”, Payot, 2002). With his wife and writing partner Julie Barlow, he published a detailed analysis of the French, Sixty Million Frenchmen Can’t Be Wrong (Sourcebooks, 2003). The book was translated into French and published by Seuil and France Loisirs in 2005 (“Pas Si Fous Ces Français!”). Praised in the New York Times, the Daily Telegraph and the Globe and Mail and by French literary critic Bernard Pivot called, the work has sold 250 000 copies in four languages (English, French, Dutch and Mandarin).

A book on the French Language

In 2006, Jean-Benoît Nadeau and Julie Barlow published their new book THE STORY OF FRENCH with Knopf (Toronto), St. Martin’s Press (New York) and Robson-Anova (UK). Praised by the New York Times, the book appeared in French later that year as La Grande Aventure de la langue française (Québec Amérique). The book will appear in France in the fall of 2010 (Télémaque).

Practical Guides

Jean-Benoit Nadeau is also author of a guide to freelance writing, Le GUIDE DU TRAVAILLEUR AUTONOME (“Guide for the Self-Employed Worker”), 2^nd edition (Québec Amérique, 2007). In 2007 he published a practical writing guide, ÉCRIRE POUR VIVRE (“Write to Live”, Québec Amérique), with practical advice for authors and journalists.

Speaking

Appreciated for his humorous talking style, Jean-Benoît Nadeau gives regularl presentations, lectures and workshops on France, the French, and the writing profession.

Since 2003 he has given 80 presentations on France and the French language in Canada, the U.S., the Netherlands, England, Japan and South Korea. He was keynote speaker for the Ontario Modern Lagnguage Teachers Associations, the International Day of the Francophonie and the American Association of Teachers of French. Jean-Benoît Nadeau has also done speaking tours with the Alliance françaises and the Quebec Delegations.

Over the last 15 years, Jean-Benoit Nadeau has regularly given workshops on writing and journalism with Quebec’s largest journalists’ association, the Fédération professionnelle des journalistes du Québec (FPJQ) as well as other professional associations.

Jean-Benoît Nadeau lives in Montreal. He has travelled in Mexico, across the United States and New Zealand and in the U.K., Algeria and has lived in Europe. He speaks fluent English and Spanish, and has some knowledge of German. Father of two daughters and married to writer Julie Barlow, he lived in France from 1999-2001 and in the U.S. in 2010.

Julie Barlow

Julie Barlow grew up in Ancaster, Ontario. After graduating from McGill University (Honours B.A. in Politial Science) and Concordia University (M.A. in English Literature), Julie began writing for national magazines in Canada. Since 1994 she has published articles in French and English in newspapers and magazines across Canada, the United States and Europe, including The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, The Christian Science Monitor and Le Courrier international.

A Bilingual Writer

Julie began learning French when she was 20. In 1996 she became a regular contributor to Quebec’s main public affairs magazine, L’actualité and one of the few journalists in Canada who publish in both English and French. Since 2003 she has been nominated for four National Magazine Awards for her work in L’actualité.

Books on France and the French Language

From 1999 to 2001, Julie lived in Paris with her husband, Jean-Benoit Nadeau. The couple’s first book, Sixty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong (Sourcebooks, 2003), was based on their experience living in France. It became an international success, was translated into French, Dutch and Mandarin, and has sold some 250 000 copies worldwide. In 2006, Barlow and Nadeau published The Story of French (St. Martin’s Press; Knopf Canada; Anova UK). The book won Quebec's 2007 Mavis Gallant Prize for Non-Fiction and was translated into French and Japanese.

World Traveller

An enthusiastic traveler, Julie has visited some 20 countries in the Americas, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. She has lived in New Zealand, France and the United States. She speaks English, French and Spanish and has studied Arabic.

Speaking and Teaching

Julie speaks widely on France and the French language at universities and for associations in Canada, the U.S. and Europe and has given keynote speaker for organizations including the American Association of Teachers of French. In 2009 she taught a seminar on Non-Fiction Writing for Quebec's Writers Federation.

Projects on the United States and Spanish

In 2010, Julie took up a Fulbright Scholarship at Arizona State University and will be spending most of the year in Tempe Arizona, working on new book projects. Julie lives in Montreal with her husband and their two daughters.
